A quick trip to see Jon

I was pretty excited when I found out that Jon's A school was in Pensacola.  And I just knew that I could sweet talk Ken into taking a long weekend and going to visit him.  As soon as we learned when Jon would have a whole weekend off we started making plans.  Kens plan was to go straight there, stay at Uncle Marks house, visit, then come straight home.  Mine was to take a detour to Mobile, Alabama to see the USS Alabama memorial, visit Jon, then head home with a stop in Nashville.  I won!

It ended up being a great trip and we got to spend lots of time with Jon and we also were able to see lots of family.  The weather was absolutely wonderful and the beach was great also.

This is called a very big propeller

A straight view of the ships interior
See that door?  There are hundreds of them throughout the ship. And if your not careful you can lose a knee.

 Lunchtime

I am fascinated by the sleeping arrangements.  I heard the ship that Jon will be on will have better ones.

 Haircut time!

 Laundry room

Box meals.  Jon said that when he will work long hours this is what kind of meal they will serve him on deck. UGH

The engine room.  Trevor would seriously love all these buttons.

 Big bullets!

 More buttons

 Bigger bullets

The operating room.  How horrible would it be to have to go there!

This room reminds me of the movie Hunt for Red October

Here is where the ammunition canisters get filled

Then the ammunition goes here and Ken shoots down the bad guys

Lots of guns on this ship

We also got to walk through a submarine.  And let me go on record as saying I will NEVER ride in one.  Ever ever ever ever ever!

 Torpedo

I would never remember what all these dials mean

These doors are worse then the ones on the battleship.  It's like you are a contortionist trying to get from room to room.

Sure, I will sleep over a torpedo.  No problem.  Sweet Dreams!

Finally we saw Jon!  Saturday we spent the morning at the beach then went to the Destin Boardwalk to experience the fishing rodeo.  Mark was out fishing so we were waiting for him to come in and weigh his catch.  He didn't land any large ones so he didn't weigh in.  But I enjoyed watching all the boats come in anyway.

Sunday afternoon all of Ken's uncles joined us at the beach.  The water felt wonderful so we just spent a few hours hanging out in the water talking.

Sunday night we went back to the Navarre Pier to catch the sunset.  Betty said this boat has to be moved in 30 days before fines start racking up.  Apparently it has been this way for quite awhile and people are getting sick of it being there.  I think it looks pretty cool.

 Our baby!

I finally got to see a dolphin

Jon showed us around his base when we dropped him off.  This is is his beach access.  They can't swim here and the water isn't very pretty, but it's still a beach.

 Some sailors fishing.

This picture makes me laugh.
This is Jon's barracks.  Looks like a nice college dorm.  I don't know why but I was expecting a more run down place.  Kinda like out at the Depo.  I was wrong.  So so so wrong.  And I am very happy about that!

 Lots of barracks

This boy slept alot this weekend.  I am glad he was able to just chill and rest.

 My two favorite men

Jon will be 50 and Ken will still be giving him advice.  I am so happy that they have a relationship where this can take place and Jon doesn't get mad at his dad for interfering.  Jon is such a respectful kid.

These are Marks dogs who made me laugh all weekend.  They will literally stand at the tree for hours waiting for a squirrel to come down.  Unfortunately most of the squirrels are smarter than they are but every once in awhile they will get one

One of the game rooms on base

Portside.  This is the club Jon goes to sometimes

Jon's few from one of the dining halls.  One building has Panda Express, Subway, and a Pizza Place.  This building has a Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and A&W.  I told him I no longer feel sorry for him.

An open area they people work out in and play soccer.

 Outside his barracks

The common area between the barracks.  I mean really, can they be anymore college like?

On our way home we stopped in Nashville and took in the music scene.  We had a great time walking down the street and into all the honky tonks.  It was the perfect way to end a great weekend!

In a few weeks Jon will be home before heading to his permanent station.  I am a little excited to know where he is going so I can start planning our next trip  : D  And of course I am excited to see him again!
